Trockel is located on Pembroke StreetDaniel Hilton

Trockel is a gem in the Cambridge crown – tucked away on Pembroke Street, you might not notice it as you walk past. But inside, there’s a bustling atmosphere and kitsch decor. But it’s the personality behind the counter that makes it special. Özlem, the manager, beams at you as you walk in. In the 10 minutes I was inside, she greeted three separate customers by name and asked one if her dad was still visiting.

I chatted with Özlem, the face behind Trockel, about the cafe, her work, and the personal touch that makes the cafe special.

What is your name and your role in Trockel?

Özlem Yıldırım Temelli - I’m the manager.

Where did the name come from? What is Trockel?

Trockel used to be owned by German people. When we bought the shop we wanted to keep the name and the history.

Why do people love Trockel so much?

I guess because it’s different to other chain coffee shops. We are all friends here and have a good time all together. Our energy is so high and I try to make sure that whoever comes here to eat and drink will leave here with high energy.

What’s the secret to your food?

I love my job. It’s the love that gives taste to all my food.
