Warnings issued after man attempts to grab student near Selwyn
Several Senior Tutors have issued safety notices after a man on a bicycle tried to grab a runner near Grange Road
Several Senior Tutors have issued warnings after a female student out for a run was grabbed at by a man on a bicycle in the Grange Road area on Friday evening.
The runner was followed by a man on a bicycle, who overtook her and tried to grab her. She managed to evade the attacker and took refuge in a unspecified Porters’ Lodge on the corner of West Road and Grange Road. The incident has been reported to the police.
A similar incident occurred last week on Queen’s Road, where a female student walking near Clare College was grabbed by a man in his 50s wearing a high-visibility vest. He let go of her after a few minutes and said that he only wanted to ask directions to the police station. The student was not hurt or mugged; however, his intentions were not clear.
In an email to its student body, Dr Jane McLarty, Senior Tutor of Wolfson College, asked that students “take particular care of [their] own personal security as darkness falls earlier now we are moving into autumn and winter; if returning from the city centre to College at night, keep to well-lighted areas and if possible walk with a friend”.
Cambridge Police have been contacted for comment.
