Calls for RON go unheard
CUSU did not re-open nominations for two NUS delegate positions as it would have been “impractical”

CUSU President, Flick Osborn, told Varsity that it would have been “impractical” to reopen nominations for two NUS delegate positions voted RON in the recent CUSU elections.
CUSU did not reopen nominations (RON) for National Union of Students Conference (NUS) delegates, it has emerged. This comes after students voted RON for two of the five positions in the recent elections which saw a 14.1 per cent turnout.
In the third round of voting for the position, those elected received just under half of of the votes, meaning that 5.56 per cent of eligible voters chose a live candidate.
Instead, CUSU Council chose President-elect Helen Hoogewerf-McComb and James White, who has been involved in student councils previously. Minutes do not reveal how the delegates were elected, but state that they would “vote in line with CUSU policy.”
Osborn said it would have been impractical to reopen nominations for the two NUS delegate positions before the NUS Conference, which runs from 8th to 10th April.
Charlie Bell said: “It hardly comes as a surprise that rather than listening to students CUSU has wrapped itself in dishonour once again.
“Anointing and ordaining their own nuncios to NUS rather than re-opening nominations – what they were obliged to do, in fact - choosing those who will ‘vote in line with CUSU Policy’ – it’s a farce.”
At the time of publishing there were no CUSU representatives available for comment.
