TV: Splash
Fiona Stainer enjoys another chance to admire Tom Daley’s speedos in ITV’s celebrity diving competition.

Despite being slated across the board last week, Splash! managed to sustain high ratings for its second episode. ITV’s latest primetime entertainment offering follows celebrities coached by Olympic heartthrobTom Daley to perform a dive on live television in front of Jo Brand and a panel of experts. To put it simply, it’s the Olympic legacy we’ve all been waiting for. Forget funding for sport. Who needs it? What we all really need is five celebrities throwing themselves off diving boards of varying heights on a Saturday night.
When I say celebrities, I mean in the loosest sense of the word. This week’s included ‘Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, Joey Essex and gardener Diarmuid Gavin. However, judging by the screams emanating from the stands, it was clear that a large proportion of the live audience were only there so they could goggle at Daley in his tiny speedos. Someone at ITV had clearly decreed that there had not been enough opportunities for said activity last week, so this episode treated us to slow motion shots of Daley performing each of the contestants’ dives. Just to show us what we should be looking for technique-wise. Obviously. The rest of the time, Daley was at the poolside ready to greet each relieved contestant, all teeth and tan, and dressed as though he’d just walked off the set of One Direction’s 'What Makes You Beautiful' video.
To be fair to the contestants, the standard was actually relatively high. Model Caprice performed a springboard dive that even impressed judge Leon ‘Simon Cowell’ Taylor (apparently a former Olympian, but more likely to be recognised as that diving commentator at London 2012 who got overly excited whenever a participant nearly cracked heads with the platform). And you can always rely on ITV for moments of high drama. Tom warned us that divers could suffer injuries, including instant bruising and split skin. ‘We’ve even got a broken bone this week!’, he proclaimed. Was Joey Essex going to dive on crutches with a broken leg? Would Diarmuid emerge with a cast on his arm? Nope. Turns out Charlotte Jackson had just broken her toe.
In the end, Eddie soared into the semi-final with a dive from the 10m platform. Charlotte wasn’t far behind after diving against Joey in the ‘splash-off’. But whilst Splash! is entertaining to an extent, a part of me wonders how many more speedo shots it will take to sustain the ratings for yet another week.
