Oxford takes women’s boat race by four lengths
Second straight victory for the Dark Blues in the last women’s race to be held at Henley
Oxford took victory today in the women's boat race, in the last event to be held at Henley-on-Thames before the move next year to the Tideway in London, the traditional venue for the men's race.
After a delayed start, Oxford took the lead from the off, and despite some hard rowing from Cambridge, the Dark Blues held out for a four length victory. It was Oxford's second successive win, and their sixth in the last seven races. Their time of five minutes 50 seconds was just six seconds outside the record for the 2km race, which was set in 2006. Cambridge remain ahead 40-28 on total women's race victories.
Earlier, Oxford had also won the women's lightweight event by three and a half lengths. There was some joy for Cambridge at the end of the day's rowing however, as the Light Blue men's lightweight crew saw off Oxford by three and a half lengths, taking victory with a time of 5 minutes 30 seconds.
