The Flying Pig, situated one mile south of Market Square, on Hills Road opposite Station Road, has just been named the best pub in Cambridge by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) for 2013. With good beer, enthusiastic staff and a quirky but great interior, decorated with beer bottles and posters, I think it genuinely deserves the title. The Pig, as my friends and I affectionately call it, has served as our watering hole for the past two terms and I regularly use its proximity to defend Homerton when it’s challenged.

The Pig has a range of four locally sourced beers on hand pumps which they rotate. The hoppy Brewer’s Gold from Crouch Vale is usually on as is Nelson’s Revenge by Woodfordes. Both are drinkable and generally well kept but are nothing to write home about. Bottled beers including banana bread beer are surprisingly tasty and certainly worth a try. Freedom Lager, a decent British-made lager is also available and there’s some pretty decent whisky behind the bar if that takes your fancy. Snacks include the essentials: crisps, nuts, chilli peanuts and the all-important pork scratchings.

The Pig also host live music, their Facebook page being the best place to find out who are playing and when. Both times I’ve been, it was very enjoyable.

I’ve recently discovered that they have a beer garden. It was a bit like stepping out into Narnia when I first noticed it, an impression that soon wears off however (the garden is closer to a beer parking-lot-with-some-potted-plants). As the Cambridge sun comes out however, it’ll be a nice area to sit in.

The Pig is a great place to go and chat with friends, or maybe even take a date. It is well worth the venture from the centre, especially on a music night. If they start to stock beers like double IPA on tap I’d seriously consider moving in!
