The Varsity Fashion Awards 2016: Male Model Nominees
For the next category in the Varsity Fashion Awards, Flora Walsh looks at the achievements of 2016’s rising stars in the male modelling business
Adonis Bosso
With a name like Adonis, it is no surprise that Bosso was destined for great things in modelling. He has featured in campaigns for Tom Ford Beauty, Todd Snyder and Ports and walked for brands like Yeezy, Belstaff, Dolce & Gabbana, Robert Geller and Rideau. Where he really shines, however, is on the street, with his unique and captivating sense of person style. Hardly a feature on fashion week street style goes by without an image of Bosso in ensembles from denim jumpsuits to the fresh-off-the-catwalk looks from the likes of Vivienne Westwood. With a blossoming social media following, Bosso is fast becoming one of the new generation of ‘supermen’ in the modelling world.
Jordan Kale Barrett
Barrett has featured in campaigns for Tom Ford, Balmain, Calvin Klein, Versace, Moschino as well as Coach, alongside Kate Moss. He has graced the covers of Vogue, CR Fashion Book by Carine Roitfeld, The London Times, Wonderland Magazine, 10 Magazine, Numéro Homme and Hercules. A series of high-profile flings with older women has secured him a place amongst the heart-breaking ‘bad boy’ set and ensures he is never far from the limelight. His rapid ascent in the male modeling business has been practically unprecedented, earning him the nick name of ‘Baby Kate’ (as in Moss) – mapping a trajectory into the realm of greats such as David Gandy, Tyson Beckford and Jon Kortajarena.
Lucky Blue Smith
Lucky Blue Smith is something of a phenomenon. With millions of followers on Instagram, an appearance on the Ellen Show and countless campaigns and editorials under his belt, it should come as no surprise to see his name featured in our shortlist. He was scouted at the age of 10 and signed to an international modelling agency by the age of 12, which makes him a veteran of the industry by the tender age of 18. Smith's modelling career took off after he dyed his hair platinum blond at his agent’s advice. He has appeared in editorials for American, French, Spanish, and Ukrainian Vogue, GQ, Elle UK, Marie Claire, V, Numéro, i-D, LOVE, and W. Smith has graced the covers of French and Spanish Vogue, GQ, V, and Harper’s Bazaar. He and several other models appeared in Tom Ford’s fashion video with Lady Gaga for SS16. Such an impressive résumé is hard to come by in an industry obsessed with new faces, so Smith’s success places him firmly at the top of his game.
Up and Coming: Abel van Oeveren
What defined van Oeveren’s work this year has been the sheer versatility and range of his looks from androgynous beauty, devastating ‘bad boy’, sophisticated gentleman, glistening Greek god to naïve ingénue. This means that an impressive range of designers have used his malleable style for both streetwear and luxury tailoring campaigns including Burberry, Y-3, Paul & Joe, Dior, and Bergdorf Goodman. He has also been featured in Vogue Hommes International, Out, Details, and Client Magazine
