Online exclusive: Coloured Souls
Photographed and styled by Rina Sawayama and Nilu Haidari
Once solely the reserve of Hell's Angels and Suicide Girls, tattoos and body art are becoming an increasingly prevalent style aesthetic in the fashion world. Aside from the personal significance tattoos hold for those who choose to go under the needle and permanently decorate their body (whether for better or for worse), body art is now being used in the fashion industry as a more creative and definitive method of styling. Whereas tattoos used to be detrimental to an aspiring models' career, the industry seems to have done an about-turn in their views on inked models. Chanel recently used Freja Beha in their Spring '11 ad campaign, and female models such as Abbie Lee Kershaw are gaining increasing fame and exposure with high-fashion brands. Heavily tattooed 'skater' boys such as Ash Stymest and the famous face of that Levis ad, Josh Beech, are leading the scene for the men.
