Zed Bias was last night's special guestflickr: togetherboston

New year, same club. For centuries, Cambridge’s Thursday night shenanigans have largely occurred within the confines of either Fez or Lola Lo’s. Fans of the former small and incongruously Moroccan-themed club were treated last night to a return of Turf, a night established just a couple of years ago but one that is already a Cambridge staple. With Turf’s founding father having now graduated, there were rumours Turf would go with him. Worry not. Last night proved that fears of this year being a techno-free abyss of chart music and literally nothing cool could be assuaged, but perhaps Turf fans are now ready for something more.

The night delivered exactly what was expected, and it did so excellently. The special guest of Zed Bias was a hit and the consistently crowded dance floor was testament Napper Tandy's enduring popularity in Cambridge. Spirits were high as students reunited after a long summer and plenty of fresher faces proved that the night’s promoters had done a successful job of filling the club with more than just the regular die-hard crowd of Turf devotees. The music was just about varied enough to keep the dancers coming back for more throughout the night.

It was, however, fifteen pounds on the door for entry. Ticket price should not normally be a huge factor in reviewing a night – if people are happy to pay and happy with what they get, then so be it. But considering what fifteen pounds will buy you elsewhere and even in London, such a high cost needs to be justified. Clearly, Turf has a captive audience in Cambridge. There were earlier tickets available at a lower price, but to charge over a tenner for a night that ends at 3am – even with a relatively high-profile special guest – suggested more of a knowing certainty that Cambridge students will pay through the nose for a night that has little competition, rather than a night that had anything special to offer.

If electronic music is your scene, then Turf is there for you and will surely satisfy the cravings left by the rather limited offerings elsewhere in Cambridge nightlife. It is a winning formula; you know what you’re getting with Turf, and they know what they’re getting from you.
