Student Music Spotlight: Fionn Connolly
Music editor Alice French talks to alternative singer-songwriter Fionn Connolly

A: Please introduce yourself
F: Fionn Connolly, Sidney Sussex College, 2nd year musician.
A: Which genre do you best fit in to?
F: Alternative singer-songwriter. It’s hard to place, but sort of electronically infused indie is somewhere near it!
A: What are the perks and/or challenges of being a band in Cambridge?
F: The perks are being around so many other talented musicians you can collab with – and having so many opportunities to perform. Open mic nights are great to meet new people, and May Balls are fantastic for giving bigger platforms to smaller artists.

A: What are your goals for the upcoming year?
F: Having just released my first album, I’m planning to do a collab series online, and record/release an EP at the end of the summer. I’m also working on a couple of music videos from my first record, the first of which should be released in the next couple of weeks! I’ll also be playing at TEDxExeter next year, and hope to play a few festivals at the end of the summer too.
A: Are there any other uni-based artists you’re excited by at the moment?
F: Some acoustic duos at Sidney – Jono & Nicola, Sam & Reece are performing really well at the moment. Finlay Stafford is performing some really amazing songs, David Nunn at Corpus is writing and producing in a really unique way. I’m hoping to work with some of them in a new collab project, which I’m really excited about!
A: What’s your ‘ride or die’ track?
F: Although it’s hard to choose one, I’d say ‘Real Fear’ is the ride or die track. It’s the first single I released from the album, and the first song I wrote from it. You can listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/fionn-connolly/real-fear
