Varsity ‘s live coverage of tonight’s Cantab victory over Merton, Oxford
Live Text
(Refreshes automatically)- St John's, Cambridge has beaten Merton, Oxford tonight at the 2018 University Challenge final
- The St John's team spoke to Varsity ahead of tonight's final, with captain James Devine-Stoneman acknowledging Merton as "formidable opponents"
9:12pm And that’s all from us! Tune in to this space the same time next year for another intellectual thrill-ride of obscure (irrelevant?) trivia.
Alas! It was not to be. Huge congratulations to @stjohnscam on a superlative performance, and a richly deserved victory. pic.twitter.com/Ubsx8L5jaV

9:00pm St. John's takes the win! In victory, they prove themselves to be as sharp as captain James Devine-Stoneman's cheekbones.
Of course, they're still poorer in monetary terms compared to Trinity, but are richer in knowledge.
8:58pm With bonuses about former UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Merton gains 10 points but mixes up China with the US (Not that it matters much, the imperialism is the same).
8:59pm The St. John's team members may be in their prime, though they trip up over a question on prime numbers. The clock ticks down.
8:55pm St John's fly even higher with an answer by McKeown about "the greatest bird poet in the world."
8:57pm Four minutes to go, with St. John's in the lead by 30 points. Though given that this was all pre-recorded, nothing I say is of any tangible value to you. Just your daily reminder that time is a human construct.
8:52pm Merton, Oxford incorrectly identifies an artist of a painting for the picture round, and St John's gets it right. Then they got 10 points from the bonuses.
8:52pm McKeown wins another 10 points for her team, to get bonuses on organic chemistry, as this humanities student struggles to provide any insightful commentary.
8:50pm Devine-Stoneman misses a bonus about a technique in NMR spectroscopy (I think) and muttered, "That's not a technique I've used," to laughter.
8:50pm St. John's deftly handles a music bonus on Handel as they take the lead over Merton.
8:45pm Merton, Oxford incorrectly identifies an opera during the music round, and St John's, Cambridge doesn't know it either. I wonder why...
8:45pm Merton, Oxford gets a bonus about a Byzantium Princess and Historian, gaining an additional 10 points.
8:44pm St John's, Cambridge has gotten the last two starter questions, and their last two bonuses have been about social theory and Sociology. Too bad none of them do HSPS.
8:41pm Merton pulls even further ahead, getting a bonus about the Great Lakes and probabilities... and apparently Lake Michigan has a slightly smaller surface area than Lake Huron.
8:38pm Merton takes an early lead, with bonuses on literature and shipping forecasts – both thrilling topics, indeed.
8:36pm And here we go...
8:33pm The team members have just introduced themselves, and Cambridge sounds smarter so far.
8:26pm We're reporting live as the University Challenge finals are set to commence in under five minutes. Watch this space.
