Controlled explosions at Cambridge Station
Customers held at station as three explosions heard after bomb alert
A bomb disposal operation has been carried out this afternoon at Cambridge Station.
Station customers were held at the scene and trains were stopped from arriving while police carried out three controlled explosions amid a bombscare. Access to East Road was restricted by police.
Varsity writer Jessica Jennings was at the scene. She said: “The police are not saying anything other than that it’s a bomb disposal operation. There have been three explosions.”
Trains began arriving back into the station at around 14:45pm but passengers were being kept inside the station.
A statement from British Transport Police (BTP) said: "Cambridge station was closed shortly before 14.30 hours today, Monday 14 June, whilst Cambridgeshire Police were dealing with a suspect vehicle. A controlled explosion has been carried out.
"The incident follows the arrest of a man by BTP after he attended the BTP police station at Cambridge railway station in relation to an arson attack on a county court building in Cambridge."
The army was present and working alongside the police. Police have confirmed that they have carried out a controlled explosion in or near the station car park.
The station was fully reopened shortly before 4pm.
