Catz dismantles ‘well-loved Catzebo’
The gazebo overlooking Trumpington Street served as a temporary replacement for the main hall as renovation work took place

Cambridge is renowned for its gothic spires and medieval courts. Yet these picturesque surroundings are marred by many a brutalist hulk and budget accommodation block which students wish would simply vanish overnight.
Such wishes are usually in vain, but for the students of St Catharine’s College, one of them has just come true.
On Saturday (3/9), Catz announced that it had dismantled the famous Main Court gazebo - dubbed the ‘Catzebo’ in a student vote.
The gazebo, which dominated the view of the College from Trumpington Street, stood for 18 months. It was built as a temporary replacement for the College’s main hall while it underwent extensive renovation work.
Students will now dine in the College’s newly renovated hall, which was built as part of a £16 million renovation project.
“The Catzebo has been a big part of my time at Catz – from formals and annual dinners to grabbing lunch between lectures, it’s become somewhat of an institution”, one student told Varsity.
They continued: “There was something lovely about eating in a (admittedly very well-made) tent, especially during the big storms that ripped the similar-looking O2 Arena!”
Despite this affection for the Catzebo, however, students seem ready to move on.
“I’m so excited to see the new hall”, one enthused. “We’ve seen all the photos over the last couple of years and now it’s finally here! While the Catzebo was well-loved, it’s not quite a grand hall!”
The JCR agreed. One representative told Varsity: “Whilst we are sad to see the Catzebo go, we are excited to have the lawn on the Main Court back and use the new hall.”
