News in brief: Pem goes TikTok famous and Caius crashes out
A ‘bussin’ round-up of this week’s news in Cambridge
Pembroke serves punt
Despite the college first being established in 1347, nearly seven centuries after its opening Pembroke has achieved perhaps its greatest accolade: TikTok stardom. A video titled ‘When your Gen Z colleague writes the marketing script’, featuring Head Porter Gordon ‘The Goat’ Murray, is making waves on social media this week. In the video posted by @pemcamoutreach, Gordon discusses the history, architecture and facilities at Pembroke college through the medium of Gen Z ‘brainrot’ slang, with “Look at this bussin marble counter” and “head to Cambridge’s pengest libraries,” being particular highlights. Very mindful of you, Gordon.
Campus Re-voi-lution
Braking news! Cambridge West, in partnership with the University, has launched a wheelie good event for those wanting to learn more about the e-scooters and e-bikes scattered across the city. The event takes place on the 17th of September and aims to give participants the opportunity to try out e-bikes, cargo bikes and e-scooters, as well as learn about transportation schemes in the city. The event is in collaboration with Zenith, Voi and Outspoken.
KiKi, do you love me?
Lola Lo is rebranding as KiKi after being bought by new owner Louise Holly. Holly, who has had success in previous venues like Chalk and Dust in Brighton, expresses how she has a deep connection with the Cambridge nightlife spot. “It was the first ever club night I ran (Thursdays at Lola) from the very first day it opened its doors. So, Lola Lo has always had a really special piece of my heart, and it’s a venue I have always loved and have had some brilliant memories in. It feels right that we are able to buy it and rejuvenate it for the next generation to enjoy,” Holly explains. So alas, we say goodbye to Slola’s (Sunday Lola’s) and with it the Lolacoaster. Will SkiSki ever hit the same? Only time will tell.
Universally Challenged
Bristol thrashed opponents Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in their team debut on University Challenge. The Bristol team, made up of Ted Warner studying Biology, Bridie Rogers studying Medicine, Kevin Flanagan studying for a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Olivia Watts studying for a PhD in Organic Chemistry, scored an impressive 325-80. The overwhelming score has allowed them to move onto the next round of the tournament. The quizzers were chosen from 200 initial University of Bristol applicants after a series of trials which included a 100-question paper and mock University Challenge episode.
