News in brief: royal visits and rabid waters
A light-hearted round-up of Cambridge news from the last week, from protesting professors to fliming pandemonium
Sister Act receives royal visit
The ADC’s Sister Act received a surprise visit from royalty this week. Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh arrived to watch a rehearsal of the show in all its crowning glory. With his helicopter parked on Jesus College cricket pavilion, the prince arrived in Cambridge and enjoyed a tour of the University, which included a trip to Junction, a music venue known for its regular ‘Slipped Disc’ club nights.
Cam on now… it’s time to ‘cut the crap’
Robert Macfarlane, Professor of Literature and the Environmental Humanities at the Faculty of English in Cambridge, attended Westminster last Sunday to protest the country’s sewage crisis. Macfarlane was seen alongside Friends of the Cam, the Cambridge-based environmental activist organisation. Over 130 organisations called on the government “to stop poisoning Britain’s water,” advocating for immediate government action. England’s water companies released almost 3.6 million hours of raw sewage into rivers and seas last year, a 105% increase compared to the previous 12 months. March for Clean Water led their protest from the Albert Embankment in Vauxhall to Parliament Square.
Weil-y bad, oar-ful even
On Monday, Cambridge University Combined Boat Clubs (CUCBC) alerted users of the river Cam to confirmed cases of leptospirosis (also known as Weil’s disease) among rowers in Cambridge. The email, from the CUCBC Honorary Secretary, included health and safety advice from British Rowing. Rowers are advised to protect minor cuts with waterproof plasters prior to outings, and to wash their hands thoroughly once they are off the water, amongst other measures.
