SU postgrad access, education, and participation officer resigns
Neela Maadhuree is the sixth sabbatical officer to leave the SU in the past year
Neela Maadhuree, the Student Union’s (SU) postgraduate access, education & participation officer has formally resigned from her position. Her final working day will be the 20th Jan this year.
Maadhuree’s resignation, announced today (9/1) via the SU’s website, stated that she is leaving the role “with a heavy heart” and “for personal reasons”.
This comes after the SU passed a motion in student council in October last year (14/10) to abolish six of its sabbatical officer roles. This includes the access and education participation officers as well as the welfare officer, with their brief being taken up by new vice-presidents.
In a statement in the SU’s website Maadhuree said that she believes “the lessons I’ve learned and the memories I’ve made will stay with me for a lifetime”.
She continued: “I wish all the best and an amazing new year to my fellow Sabbs, staff members, and, of course, the students. I’ll miss being around you all.”
Maadhuree also made note of key achievements made during her tenure, including creating a Cambridge glossary, supporting the international students campaign, and campaigning for the deferred admission option for postgraduate students.
She also commented on the SU’s annual Freshers’ Fair which she described her involvement in as “both exhausting and exhilarating”, adding that she is “incredibly proud to have contributed to such a significant event for students”.
Maadhuree is the sixth SU sabbatical officer to have resigned in the past 12 months. Previously, Harvey Brown, the SU’s welfare and community officer resigned after attacking the organisation’s stance on the Israel-Gaza war in a post on the SU Welfare page.
Brown stated that the SU is “fragrantly disconnected with student movements” and that “neither Cambridge SU nor Cambridge University has to date condemned Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza”.
She is also the second of the current sabbatical officer team to leave the SU, after Manjari Gupta was unable to take up her post as women’s officer in July.
