Union Supports The Motion
This house believes that the mood of members is more important than tradition
Following members’ feedback, the Cambridge Union has transformed the traditional Valentine’s Ball into a live music event featuring student favourites The Axis of Awesome and Truly Medley Deeply.
After recent unrest surrounding the Union’s value for money, the new committee have also elected to slash the cost of the newly-dubbed ‘One Night Stand’ to less than a quarter of the original price.
The ball had been suffering poor ticket sales since its launch night on Thursday last week. The Union therefore hopes that the revamp will improve on this.
“Due to the number of balls coming up in the next few months, members were looking for a more relaxed experience,” clarified new President, Lauren Davidson.
“The Union is making a conscious effort to respond to member feedback this term, and we would like members to know how much we are listening to them.”
As the oldest student debating society in the world, the Cambridge Union constantly has to fight off hostile criticism of its supposedly stuffy and elitist image.
However, the Lent 2011 Committee seem keener than ever to match the heated clash of opinions in the Chamber with the equally contrasting themes of highbrow politics and light-hearted popular culture in order to represent the eclectic interests of the student body itself.
The recent termcard elevates the comedic value of Bill Nighy to the same stage as DNA-discoverer, Professor James Watson.
The significance of policies in the Union elections was clouded by student-media focus on the relative attractiveness of candidates. So the Valentine’s Ball alterations clearly aim to add modern credibility to a nineteenth-century institution.
One Night Stand will still be hosted on Saturday 12th February but at the later time of 9pm.
