A 'Wages Not Wine' protest will take place outside King’s College tomorrow.

The protest has been organised by the King's Living Wage Campaign.  Barney McCay, one of the leaders of the campaign, said, “We believe that wages should come first.

“King's College should prioritise the welfare of the people who make it run. This protest aims to move the conversation onto wages, and show King's that it's wages we care about, not wine.”

In the last week it has been revealed that King's spends £338,559 on wine per year.  While some of this wine is sold on for profit, £50,000 is spent on free wine for fellows.

Meanwhile, King's employs 123 people on under the living wage - a rate of £7.65 per hour set in line with geographically variable living costs.  It has been argued by members of the campaign that the £50,000 spend on fellows’ wine would be more than enough to raise all full time workers’ pay to above the living wage.

The protest will begin at 1pm on Sunday outside King's. A spokesperson for the King's Living Wage Campaign said: “It will be a simple protest. Short and sweet with just a banner or two and as many people as possible showing how much this means to them.”
