CUSU awarded £10,000 for paper boats
The National Union of Students will be funding CUSU’s ‘Vote Race’ campaign, promoting voter registration to Cambridge students during the Varsity Boat Race

The National Union of Students have awarded CUSU £10,000 to fund their 'Vote Race' campaign, an initiative encouraging Cambridge students to vote that will coincide with the Cambridge and Oxford boat race on 11th April.
The boat-themed campaign will be "using paper boats encouraging students to register", according to the CUSU website.
The Facebook event for the planned 'Vote Race' calls the stunt a "Boat Race Paper Boat Flash Mob" and states that "The paper boats are in aid of the CUSU branch of the National Voter Registration campaign… the Vote Race!"
Helen Hoogewerf-Mccomb, the outgoing CUSU President, said of the campaign: "When it comes to deciding the future direction of our country, CUSU believes it is vital for students and young people to be part of the process. There is a lot of talk of apathy amongst young people in the UK but we know from working with students that they can be incredibly passionate about social issues on a local and national level. Students care deeply about the world around them and it is important that they have a role in shaping our society, and ensuring that their interests as students are taken into account."
The main event on 11th April will involve bringing light blue paper boats, as pictured above, to the boat race, with the best "boatie pic" winning £50.
Speaking to Varsity, James Sutton, a student at Fitzwilliam, said that "it should be a fun way to show our support for the light blues, and I definitely think it's important as many students register to vote as possible".
Not all reactions were so positive. When asked for their opinion on the NUS funding, a third-year Corpuscule said: "Spending £10,000 on this kind of gimmick is an insult to our intelligence. Are paper boats really going to convince people to register to vote in a way that £10,000 spent elsewhere wouldn't?"
The campaign will, however, extend beyond April 11th, with events and social media engagement continuing until voter registration closes on April 20th.
Other planned activities listed on the CUSU website include targeting graduate students, creating an inter-college competition for the most registered students, promoting registration to international students and "attending Colleges over the weekend of 18th and 19th April as students return from the Easter break to promote registration before the deadline."
Varsity contacted various other UK student unions about the NUS funding they received for voter registration. A representative from the University of York Students' Union replied stating that: "I do not believe we received funding from the NUS, however I have forwarded your e-mail onto our Campaigns Coordinator and we will confirm this for you soon."
