Dr. Henry Cabrera has spent his life working to make a difference—not just in one area, but in two that he cares deeply about. Through his efforts, he has transformed how patients recover after surgery and brought new life to a historic Rhode Island farm.
His life’s work shows that with dedication and a clear purpose, it’s possible to achieve meaningful progress even in fields that are as different as healthcare and sustainable farming.
From advancing anesthesiology practices to revitalizing Lavender Waves Farm into a peaceful and thriving space, Dr. Cabrera’s work highlights his passion for science, compassion for others, and respect for the environment. He has created a legacy that not only improves lives but also leaves something meaningful for future generations.
Leading the Way in Modern Medicine
Dr. Carbrera’s path in medicine began with a strong educational foundation paired with practical, hands-on training. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Pre-professional Investigations with a minor in Science Innovation and Qualities from the College of Notre Dame, followed by his MD from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten.
After earning his degree, Dr. Cabrera completed a surgical internship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. These experiences gave him the confidence and skills needed to excel in his field, preparing him for future leadership roles.
In 2010, he became Chief of Anesthesiology at South County Hospital (SCH), where he spent 12 years improving patient care. One of his most impactful contributions was creating the Perioperative Opioid-Sparing Program, which helped thousands of patients recover from surgery more safely by reducing their reliance on opioids. Its success has been recognized in the media and continues to benefit patients today.
He also played a major role in developing the Perioperative Surgical Home, a system that made the surgical process smoother and more effective for both patients and medical teams. Dr. Cabrera’s drive to grow as a leader led him to earn a Certificate in Business Administration[1] in 2014.
Along with these achievements, he has maintained an active research program, focusing on advancements in anesthesiology to improve patient outcomes. He is famous in his field, recognized for his honors and specialized expertise. Dr. Cabrera’s work has set a standard for thoughtful, patient-centered care, transforming how surgery and recovery are approached at SCH and beyond.
Finding His Purpose in Medicine
As a first-generation college graduate, Dr. Cabrera was driven to build a successful career for himself. His interest in medicine started early, as he enjoyed physiology in school. This passion only deepened during a profound experience at the University of Miami Cardiothoracic Research Lab, where he volunteered. Once, he accompanied a team on a private jet to harvest a heart for a transplant, which confirmed his decision to pursue medicine.
While he was in medical school, he realized he had a passion for anesthesiology during his clinical rotations. This specialty combined his love for science and humanity while offering a better work-life balance. Known for his perfectionism, Dr. Henry Cabrera has always gone the extra mile to ensure his patients receive the best care, even if it means adding more work to his plate.
Restoring Lavender Waves Farm
In late 2016, Dr. Cabrera took on a new challenge: restoring Lavender Waves Farm in Rhode Island. He wanted to bring the farm back to life using sustainable and modern methods.
His first steps included installing electricity, fixing the water system, and building three stables with Dutch doors. He also created a special poultry area, focusing on the welfare of the animals. By 2017, he began preparing the land for lavender by planting corn, and by 2018, he had planted over 4,000 lavender plants across 10 different varieties.
To make the farm even more inviting, Dr. Cabrera added a central gazebo, designed beautiful lavender rows, and built a garage with living space above it to support farm operations. These changes transformed the property into a vibrant and productive farm. Its innovative design and serene beauty have been recognized by various media outlets, marking its success as a modern agricultural landmark.
Bringing People Together Through Lavender Waves Farm
Although Lavender Waves Farm is a private property, Dr. Cabrera wanted to share its beauty with the community. In 2020, he opened the farm for regulated lavender cuttings during peak seasons. This allowed visitors to experience the farm while keeping it peaceful and well-maintained.
The farm also created jobs for locals and drew volunteers, including members of the Kingston Hill Garden Club. Even descendants of the original farm owners have admired how Dr. Cabrera has honored the land’s history while giving it a new purpose. Today, Lavender Waves Farm is celebrated for its beauty, tranquility, and connection to the community.
Balancing Work, Passion, and Life
After 12 years as Chief of Anesthesiology, Dr. Cabrera decided to step back from full-time leadership to focus on his well-being. This allowed him to spend more time at his farm, which has become a major source of joy and purpose.
Among the farm’s many unique features are its five camels—⅚ of the privately owned camels in Rhode Island. Caring for them and managing the daily rhythms of farm life provides Dr. Cabrera with a fulfilling way to stay connected to nature and his personal passions.
For Dr. Cabrera, success isn’t measured solely by professional milestones. It’s about earning the respect and trust of those around him. His dedication and expertise are clear in the way he’s consistently trusted and sought after for leadership roles and anesthesia care.
While his demanding schedule doesn’t leave much time for charitable work, Dr. Cabrera’s contributions to both medicine and farming have created meaningful, positive change for countless people. Whether it’s through improving healthcare or restoring a historic farm, his work reflects his passion for leaving things better than he found them.
A Legacy of Dedication
Dr. Cabrera’s journey shows how vision and determination can create meaningful change for both people and the world around them. His groundbreaking work in anesthesiology has transformed patient recovery, while his efforts at Lavender Waves Farm have revitalized the land and deepened connections within his community.
By dedicating himself fully to both medicine and farming, Dr. Henry Cabrera has created a legacy that motivates others to follow their passions and leave their own mark. His story is a reminder that real impact comes from pairing hard work with a clear sense of purpose.
