BUCSCast: Lent Gameweek 4
Alongside the University Sports Service, we bring you all the highlights and the lowlights of a Light Blue week in BUCS

As the Light Blues teams load up their wagons with rifles, crosses, and épées and head north to Sheffield for the BUCS Nationals, another successful week offers much promise for a return journey with medals in tow. Here, we focus on six wins including four teams heading onward to semi-finals.
Hockey - Men’s 1st vs Oxford 1st – Result: Win
A fantastic Wednesday afternoon saw a 4-1 triumph over Oxford and progression up to 4th place in the Premier South League for the Men’s 1st. Although Cambridge secured a deserved result the score line suggests a more one sided affair than reality, and the Dark Blues will be very disappointed not to have come away with something from the game after a goal which would have made the score 2-2 was controversially scrubbed off. Cambridge showed great resurgence after this however to create scoring opportunities and secure the win, with the final goal coming from a well worked short corner routine.
The Light Blue’s final league match of the season is away at Exeter on the 19th February, and a win could secure a podium 3rd place finish as well as presenting fantastic momentum for the Varsity clash on 1st March.
Basketball – Women’s 1st vs Nottingham Trent – Result: Win
A one sided afternoon for the Light Blues saw Nottingham Trent dispatched nursing wounds after a 65-32 drubbing. Cambridge now progress on to the Conference Cup semi-final on the 26th February to face county neighbours Bedfordshire or Cranfield away.
Fencing – Birmingham vs Women’s – Result: Win
The Light Blue women can take a well earnt breather after wrapping up the Midlands 1A division as runaway winners with two games to spare with a win away at title challengers Birmingham. This ensures the team will go on to the Promotion Playoffs in April to play in a knockout tie containing UCL and the winners of the Western and South East Tier 1. This goes alongside a cup semi-final on the 19th February against Royal Holloway (who they may well face in the promotion play off) to form a busy end of season.
Netball – Loughborough 5th vs Women’s 1st – Result: Win
Cambridge march on to the semi-final of the conference cup in a spirited win over Loughborough, overturning a five point deficit at half time to take the tie 41-35. Next, they face title rivals Warwick on home turf in the semi-final before taking them again on in a must watch decisive league game on 19th February as part of a Cambridge back to back triple header which sees all three teams in action-one not to be missed!
Netball – Women’s 3rd vs Oxford 3rd – Result: Win
Meanwhile, the thirds claimed an always welcome win over Oxford to progress to the semi-final of the Conference Plate, a result which offers much promise for the upcoming Varsity on March 1st. Next in the Plate is a tricky home tie against a UEA 2nd’s team, riding high two leagues above the Light Blues, at the University Sports Centre on the 26th February from 2:30pm.
Hockey – Women’s 2nd vs Harper Adams – Result: Win
A thrilling afternoon at the Wilberforce saw the Light Blue’s overcome Harper Adams by a single goal to claim their Conference Cup quarter final 5-4 and send their opponents back to Shropshire empty handed. For the semi-final Cambridge travel to Loughborough on the 26th February.
