BUCSCast: Game Week 8
Alongside the University Sports Service, we bring you all the highlights and the lowlights of a Light Blue week in BUCS.

As the BUCS season moves into its final throws, and with the quite real possibility of no arranged sport anywhere around the land for the foreseeable future, teams gear up for hard-fought cup final fixtures. In this, an oustanding tally of four Cambridge teams found themselves at the Conference Cup Finals over at UEA (11/03), all of whom had been relegated from Tier 1 in 2018/19 but had more than proved their credentials in Tier 2 this season.
Fencing M2, Basketball W1 and Lacrosse M1 all gained instant promotion back to Tier 1 at the first ask, whilst Netball’s fantastic efforts saw them narrowly pipped at the post to finish second.
On Cup Final day, Fencing 2 were able to win gold medals after a very satisfying victory over Oxford 2nd who they had also faced over the weekend at Varsity. The other three put in equally valiant performances and were all able to bring silver medals back to the Fens.
In other BUCS fixtures…
Basketball – Men's 1st vs Worcester – Result: Win
Men’s basketball were able to finish their splendid season with a win against Worcester to finish with a solid 4-6 win/loss ratio to record a 4th place finish and secure their place in Tier 1 for next year. A great campaign offers much to build on for the future in a hugely competitive league as the squad finished only behind the incredibly well-resourced outfits from Derby, Nottingham Trent and Nottingham.

Ultimate Frisbee – Worcester vs Men's 1st – Result: Win
The Ultimate team managed to finish the regular league season on a high in this rearranged fixture deep into the West Midlands away to Worcester with a commanding 12-8 victory. The fixture list wasn’t kind to the team this year with a five-game season seeing them trek to Worcester, Birmingham and Warwick. Despite these pilgrimages, the team now progress to the Trophy Cup Competition scheduled to take place on 4th and 5th April.
Tennis – Women's 1st vs Warwick – Result: Win
Women’s 1st won their Trophy semi-final against Warwick to set up a BUCS Big Wednesday final visit for the second year on the trot. Here, they’ll face Nottingham 2nd who are looking likely to win the league above the Light Blues. This will be a challenge the squad will relish, riding high on confidence having already beaten Loughborough 2nd in the quarter-finals. They were set to join W1 Fencing, M1 Water Polo and M1 Volleyball at the event which has now been postponed.
Shortlists have now also been released for the Sports Awards so take a look at those nominated here.
