It’s three in a row for the girls
The women’s Blues have won three games in four days, the final one against Birmingham
Cambridge 5 - 0 Birmingham
Yesterday the Cambridge Blues went into their 3rd match in 4 days with their BUCS league already won. But this did not mean they were willing to lose. Arriving late due to snowy conditions, the girls had about 15 minutes to warm up before they were to kick off against the next best team in the league, who had only lost to Cambridge all season. Scrums abounded in the messy conditions, and both packs of forwards were really working for possession. The pressure from the Cambridge back line and back row made it hard for Birmingham to gain much ground, but several dangerous breakaway runs were nearly had down the wing, only to be shut down by fullback Pinkie Binning.
Pressure from Birmingham (often from offside positions) also made it difficult for Cambridge to do much with the ball, and the exhaustion felt by the Cambridge team made the match quite even. Yesterday's ref, who seemed to be controlling Cambridge and leaving Birmingham to play as they pleased, also seemed to keep the match even. A period of about 10 minutes was spent within 10 meters of the Cambridge line, but the defensive pressure and tackling kept Birmingham at bay. Neither team managed to score any points until the very last play of the game when fly-half Anne Venner managed to put the ball over the line in a hard and determined run for the win.
