A super Saturday for Cambridge Hockey
On Saturday 8th, history was made at Wilberforce Road Sports Ground when, for the first time, all eight Cambridge University Hockey Club teams played there on the same day. The Blundies and Rovers also made their league debuts and won convincingly.
For the first time in history, eight Cambridge University Hockey Club (CUHC) teams were playing at Wilberforce Road Sports Ground (Wilby) — on the same day. The weather was glorious and the hockey was liquid, with five wins and three losses.
The day started off perfectly at 10 AM with The Beds (W 3's) securing a comfortable 2–0 victory over The Cambridge Nomads 1's. At 10:30, The Blunderers (M 4's) and Rovers (W 4's) began their debut seasons, and it was great to see the other teams come down early to watch them play. The Rovers demolished the Cambridge South 6's 7–0 and The Blunderers (Blundies) won 3–0 against the Bourne Deeping 4's. When approached for comment, Blundies captain Matty Hambling confirmed a title charge was definitely on the cards.
Cambridge's good fortune continued with The Women's Blues (W 1's) beating Norwich City 1's 2–1. The Wanderers (M 2's) saw out an incredibly tense game to win 4–3; by 13:30 Cambridge had won all five games that had been played. Spirits at Wilby were riding high, and there was real excitement that an eight game sweep could be on the cards.
Alas, it was at this point that results started to go against Cambridge. The Men's Blues' (M 1's) game against Saffron Walden was frenetic and exciting. The home crowd were loving it. Saffron Walden scored first, but Cambridge hit back, with Seb Walton scoring a sizzling penalty flick to level the game. However, as the game progressed, Saffron Walden proved more clinical and the game finished as a 4–2 loss, though there were still plenty of positives to take from the match. The Nomads (W 2's) were really unlucky in their 1–0 defeat to The City of Peterborough Ladies 2's. It was a hard-fought game and could have gone either way. In the last match of the day, The Squanderers (M 3's), true to their name, squandered the chance to finish super Saturday on a high, with a 3-1 defeat to Cam City 4's. No doubt, captain Nick Power will whip the team into shape and they'll pick up some points next week.
Despite the day not ending as it started, CUHC should be chuffed with five wins out of eight. In particular, after such convincing wins it will be interesting to follow how The Blundies and Rovers perform in their debut seasons.
