Cambridge Rugby Blues in actionQing Lu

Cambridge University Rugby Club lost at home to Bishop Stortford last week, the visitors winning 26-10. This was the second win in a row for Bishop Stortford against Cambridge.

Despite tries from Charles Kantolina and Luke John, and a impressive performance by Eoin Finn, Cambridge were unable to match the speed and efficiency of Bishop Stortford's attack.

Bishop Stortford sped to a 19-0 lead after 22 minutes, with tries from Alex Gilham, Jake Morris and Joe Radley. Cambridge were given hope before half time with a Charles Kantolina try, but in the opening 22 minutes of the second half, Cambridge conceded three scrum penalties, were given a yellow card, and then conceded a penalty try from the scrum.

In the opening half an hour Bishop Stortford raced out of the blocks, pinning Cambridge in their own half and starving them of possession. The ability of their backs to quickly ship the ball out wide was causing a narrow Cambridge defence problems. Winger Alex Gilham opened the scoring for Bishop Stortford with a try in the corner.

In the 18th minute, the ball was quickly passed out to the fullback Charlie Parkhouse, who drew in two defenders before passing to Joe Radley. Radley released the ball to the centre Jake Morris for a score in the corner.

Five minutes later, a beautiful cross-field kick by Jack Scantlebury again found Charlie Packhouse and Joe Radley in a two-on-one. Accurate passing meant that Radley went from try assister to try scorer, and suddenly Cambridge were staring at an embarrassing scoreline.

Cambridge finally began to get some territory of their own before half-time. Charles Kantolina started and finished an impressive and powerful Cambridge try, and they continued to build in the second half. However, Cambridge's play at the scrum let them down and prevented them from building a comeback.

Luke John came off the bench to score a late consolation try for the home side, with Eoin Finn also showing flashes of flare, but Cambridge were well beaten by this point.

The Cambridge Blues face the British Police in their next match. They will be well served to adopt some of the speed and power shown by Bishop Stortford.
