The women continued their domination last Wednesday with very strong performances against Bristol and Nottingham Trent.

The Blues travelled to Bristol to demolish Bristol 1sts in style, 10-2. They got off to a flying start in the doubles as the number 1 pair Laura Morrill (Murray Edwards) and Secretary Kadi Saar (Trinity) played their best match of the year and absolutely demolished Bristol’s first pair 6-1 6-2.

Cambridge’s second pair Captain Emma Kudzin (Newnham) and Amy Zhang (Trinity) didn’t finish much later, comfortably winning 6-2 6-3. All four players were playing great tennis, smashing down un-returnable serves and intercepting daintily at the net.

The singles continued in the same vein. After overcoming initial rustiness, Laura cruised to the first set 6-1 but had to get through a second set tussle holding serve in some crucial games to win the set 7-5.

Kadi too faced a tricky opponent in singles, and one who had taken her to three sets in their previous encounter. The first set was tight with Kadi emerging the victor 7-5 but the second set was a different affair as she comfortably closed out the set 6-2.

Amy proved far too good for her opponent, winning 6-3 6-1. Her movement was far superior and her opponent just couldn’t handle her impeccable depth.

Unfortunately, due to injuries to her hand and wrist, Emma had to pull out of her singles conceding the only match but the overall team performance was stellar.

The Blues are currently rated among the top 4 teams in the UK, their highest position to date and a phenomenal achievement in a league dominated by tennis academy universities.

The Ladybirds too proved their mettle, walking all over Nottingham Trent in a 10-2 victory. Nottingham Trent had only sent three people in fear and the Ladybirds leapt on this advantage.

Marilena Papadopoulou (Trinity) and Katie Booth (Ftiz) played a fantastic doubles, far outplaying their opponents and displaying grace and agility at the net.

Marilena then continued her unbeaten streak to annihilate her opponent 6-2 6-0. Sophie Walker (Peterhouse) followed suit, winning in a double bagel 6-0 6-0; her opponent stood no chance against her speed and super-fast serving.

Sam Davie (Newnham) fought valiantly with a foot injury that was later diagnosed as a stress fracture but unfortunately lost her singles in a close three-setter 6-3 1-6 2-6.

This excellent win has cemented the Ladybirds’ position as fourth in the 1A Midlands division.
