Following the loss of former Captain Cameron Johnston from last year’s squad, the remaining members of last year’s victorious Varsity team were eagerly awaiting the start of the BUCS league 2012/13. With many familiar faces, a new, inspired and dedicated Captain (Sven Sylvester), some impressive young talent and a general buzz around the tennis courts at David Lloyds, the Light Blues have come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders in the Midlands 1A division.

The league is made up of six teams (Cambridge, Nottingham, Loughborough 2nds, Warwick, University of East Anglia and Oxford 2nds) each competing for one play-off spot against the bottom team of the Northern Premier in order to go up to the top division. After a commanding Light Blue thumping of the Oxford Seconds in their first home match, the Tennis Blues looked to stamp their authority when they travelled to Norwich the following week to take on the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Men’s firsts. Another emphatic 12-0 win sent the Light Blues to the top of the table without being close to dropping a set yet. The sternest test for the Blues so far was a travelling Warwick team led by ex-Oxford Captain Marc Baghdadi who relishes the Cambridge fixtures more than anything. The spirited Warwick fight proved much too weak for a Cambridge team with experience, talent and flair all on show and with another 12-0 win in the bag it’s been a perfect light blue start to the new season.

The next two league matches will pose the greatest threat to the Cambridge team as they attempt to annihilate the 2nd (Loughborough 2nds) and 3rd (Nottingham University 1sts) teams in the league and therefore maximise their chances for promotion to the Northern Premier Division.

The team is also competing in the BUCS Men’s Trophy which is a knockout tournament commencing with a home match this coming Wednesday against the UEA Men’s 1sts. The tournament draw looks promising for the light blues as they also seek to emulate their league successes in the Cup! With a pool of talent of eleven players to choose from, the team is looking stronger than last year and the additional help from world-class coach Nick Brown, the stage is set for what will hopefully be a very successful Cambridge University Tennis year.
