Cambridge students the hardest working in the country, officially
A survey has found that students from Cambridge work the most hours per month, but spend nearly the least on alcohol
In news that will make us all feel a little better – or nerdier – about ourselves, Cambridge students have been found to be the most hardworking in the country.
Natwest’s Student Living Index found that Cambridge students spend on average 137.7 hours per month in the (figurative) library. Small caveat, though: the survey is done on a city basis, meaning that students from Anglia Ruskin are also included.
Oxford are our closest rivals, but only spend a frankly paltry 123.8 hours studying each month. Students in London spend less than half the time we do working, with an average of 61.5 hours per month.
The survey of 3,407 students, 104 of whom were from Cambridge, threw up some other interesting findings. Students in Cambridge spend the second lowest amount on alcohol each month – just £29.76 apparently.

We’re a bit higher up in the pack for the amount we spend on going out and on fashion, with the average figures for Cambridge standing at £20.90 and £26.30 respectively.
Although we might not be going out that much, that doesn’t mean we’re spending all of our time working. Students in Cambridge spend on average 26 hours a month socialising, placing us roughly in the middle of other university cities.
The survey also found that Cambridge is only the 20th most affordable city to live in for students. Natwest calculated affordability by dividing students’ average monthly living and accommodation costs by their average monthly income.
Students from Cambridge ranked sixth for the termly income from parents, with Durham leading the pack on that one, while we are ranked third for income from bursaries – on average £143.50
