What were your expectations going into the date?

A couple of my friends had signed up, and although we were taking it seriously, we were also doing it for a bit of fun and to meet new people. We didn’t want to attach too much hope to it. I was also curious to see who I’d be matched with based on my interests.
Where did you meet?
The Maypole.
What were the vibes like?
Initially? It was good. He was right outside so we didn’t have to find each other – I was so scared about having to walk in and scan the room! We were chatting straight away, and it flowed really well from the start. Because it was a blind date, and sort of a strange concept, we could chat about that – like, “oh, why did you sign up?“, and asking about the process itself.
Did the date meet your expectations?
All I wanted was to meet someone new and have a chat, and that’s exactly what it was.
What were your first impressions?
That he was super nice and super smiley. He wasn’t awkward or nervous, which was good because I worried I’d have to be carrying the conversation! He was good at matching energy and was friendly straight away.
“In the middle of our date, a girl from my College showed up with a boy from Oxford who’d gone to school with my date!”
What did you speak about?
A bit about our degrees, but mostly what we do for fun, a lot about film and songs. We’d spoken about school, and in the middle of our date, a girl from my College showed up with a boy from Oxford she’d just met at a rowing social, and it turns out he’d gone to school with my date! So they came over and we chatted with them – it was so strange, we’d just been speaking about his school and that friend.
Were there any awkward moments?
I think the end of a date is always awkward, but we both realised at about quarter to 11 that it was time to go. So I wouldn’t say there was, unless, of course, he thinks differently!
How would you describe him in three words?
Outgoing, interesting, matched energy.
Would you see him again?
In a platonic way, yeah. We got on well, and he was really good to chat with, but based off the vibes – and I’m sure he thinks the same – I don’t think it was very romantic. Our paths won’t cross naturally because of subject differences, but if I did see him I’d chat to him.
How would you rate the date out of 10?
It didn’t feel like a “date” date, so it’s hard to rate, but in terms of an enjoyable experience? Eight.

What were you hoping for? Did you have any pre-date expectations?
Not really – I think it was more so a thing of assessing the vibe, like seeing if we’re compatible, can we hold a conversation for two hours… It was just a bit of fun signing up, so no expectations really.
What were the vibes like in the Maypole?
We stayed in the Maypole for nearly three hours. I love it there! It was busy so that was a bit of a problem, but it was still nice.
What were your first impressions of Amy?
It was very easy to get into chatting, it was a really good energy, which was maintained through the date. Nothing particularly stood out as a first impression! I guess the normalcy of the situation stood out – we were just two students going on a date.
What did we talk about? Did the conversation flow?
“You’ll be on Hinge and see people you know [from Cambridge] – nightmare material!”
It flowed really well, it was nice. We did the classic “subject, college” talk, but it developed beyond that to a “getting to know each other” conversation. We spoke about books, art, and film, and some random bits like Hinge and Cambridge dating. We had a long chat about how funny Cambridge dating is, and how you’ll be on Hinge and you’ll see people you know – nightmare material! But there were no awkward silences.
If you had to describe Amy in three words, what would they be?
Confident, fun, friendly.
What do you think she thought of you?
I think the fact we were there for as long as we were meant that we were enjoying each other’s company. I think she’d probably say nice because she never ran off!
Would you see her again?
Yeah, I would. But of course I don’t know if she would!
What would you rate the date out of ten?
Eight.
If you could change anything about the evening what would it be?
Maybe going somewhere else afterwards, or doing an activity. That would’ve been pretty fun.
