Where would we be without this culinary marker of the weekend to keep us grounded? Neve Wilson with permission for Varsity

The cultural importance of brunch at this university is extraordinary. Where would we be without this culinary marker of the weekend to keep us grounded? Without it, I fear Saturday and Sunday would just be days like any others, seeing as the concept of a non-working weekend is foreign to us all. It’s always fun to branch out with your brunch options and nosey around other colleges in the process, but where to start? Before the holidays give us all hash brown withdrawals, take this quiz to  find out where you should go next.

Firstly, what kind of aesthetics are you looking for from your brunch environment?

A) I don’t mind some Great Hall vibes, but really I want a comfortable-seeming space

B) I like a nice big, light, airy space

C) It’s really not about the aesthetics – it’s about the friends you make along the way

D) I want to actually feel like I’m in a Harry Potter movie

How much money are you prepared to fork out for this weekend culinary treat?

A) I’m prepared to pay mid-range prices if that’s warranted

B) Give me the best value brunch in town

C) Cheap and cheerful is the way to go (emphasis on the cheap)

D) Money is no object; alternatively, I have friends on the inside

How important is the variety of brunch items on offer for you?

A) I’m a sucker for a daily special option

B) It’s very important – give me more than one different kind of sausage

C) I don’t believe in messing around with the classic options

D) Quality is more important. This being said, all the traditional fry up components should be covered (I’m talking black pudding and all)

What kind of sweet treat options are you looking for?

A) If pancakes might be on offer, I’m there

B) All of them: patisserie, muffins, waffles, donuts... I want it all

C) Give me a humble croissant and I’m happy

D) I’m looking for a classic range of quality patisserie

What’s your preferred kind of egg?

A) Is poached on offer?

B) I want options

C) Fried

D) Scrambled

Selwyn brunch is for you! The special options at Selwyn are one of the chief excitements of Grange Road, so check the menus and get hyped. Personally I’m a sucker for the hash and poached eggs special, but the pancakes are also well worth a try.

If you picked mostly B...

You should try Fitzwilliam brunch! I promise the trek up the hill is worth it for this one. Fitz may not be the most scenic of colleges, but the brunch delivers hard on variety and value for money. It is also a veritable sweet treat heaven.

If you picked mostly C...

It’s time to try Robinson brunch! Now, this is the brunch I call home, so I am trying hard to set aside any biases. I can honestly say that the quality is strong for a very respectable price. Enjoy a no-frills, no-nonsense classic brunch with impeccable vibes and a unique red brick setting. We welcome all with open arms.

Which type of friend are you?

Corpus Christi brunch calls! Well, someone is clearly a very classy character. Corpus’ reputation for having some of the best quality brunch foods is well-deserved. It’s also in one of the nicest formal halls I’ve seen. So if you can get past the intimidation of that, and stomach the obscene surcharge (phone a friend on the inside if you possibly can), this one will definitely deliver.
