As a team, we believe in the importance of the student voice. This Michaelmas, we want to hear yours.
Members of the visual team will be responsible for the production of a wide range of photojournalism and videojournalism – from news reports and documentaries to lighthearted satire and fashion shoots. You’ll have creative freedom and a space to grow and experiment with new ideas.
We are looking to recruit photographers, illustrators, and videographers, as well as two team leads. No experience is required for these roles. We hope to assemble a team of people with a range of diverse talents. Most importantly, we want team members with fresh ideas for photography and video content in Cambridge as we seek to diversify our output this term.
Got any questions about joining the team? Just drop an email to next term’s editors, Taneesha Datta and Isabel Dempsey, at applications@varsity.co.uk.
Click the drop-box below to see what’s required of each role, and what we need from you in your application.
Head of Visual
We’re looking for an individual interested in photojournalism and graphic design to lead our team of photographers, videographers, and illustrators next term. They’ll be well-placed to organise coverage of breaking stories and assist the Fashion and Vulture editors in coordinating photoshoots for print. They should have strong management skills and be prepared to help train and assist the team. To apply, please send us an email detailing any skills and experience you have for the role. If available, please also attach a short portfolio of your previous work.
Photographers
Our photography team keeps the newspaper looking vibrant with new visual content. As a staff photographer, you will have the chance to pursue creative projects, work on fashion photoshoots, or cover Cambridge events as part of the News team. To apply, please send us an email detailing any skills and experience you have for the role. If available, please also attach a short portfolio of your previous work. If you don’t have experience or a portfolio, that’s fine too — just let us know why you’re interested in the role!
Illustrators and Cartoonists
Varsity relies on a strong, dynamic visual presence. As a staff illustrator, you’ll have the chance to be at the forefront of that change, joining a creative space where you’ll be encouraged to experiment, and creating art that speaks to student perspectives. Whether you are an artist, graphic designer or cartoonist, we’d love to hear from you. To apply, please send us an email detailing any skills and experience you have for the role. If available, please also attach a short portfolio of your previous work. If you don’t have experience or a portfolio, that’s fine too — just let us know why you’re interested in the role!
Videographers
The video team will be responsible for creating and developing a range of exciting video features and series. We’re looking for people to shoot, edit and present Varsity’s video output. We will be able to provide opportunities to expand and develop your skills, and introduce you to a range of video equipment. Don't worry if you don't have any experience - our video team will be a space to try out new things, and learn more about video journalism and video production. To apply, please provide: 1) An explanation of the role you would like to have within the video team and one suggestion for video content you’d like to see in Michaelmas term, and 2) An outline of any experience you have of working with video, including a link to any examples (absolutely none required), and details of any equipment or software you have access to (again, none required).
Puzzle Maker
Enjoy a crossword? Good with wordplay? Fancy a sudoku? This term, games and puzzles will return to our print editions - and we're looking for individuals to design them. This is a fun, low-commitment role. To apply, please send us a short application explaining why you're interested in the role. Please also provide three examples of prompts you would include in a Varsity crossword.
All applications should include your full name, subject, college and year, as well as the role(s) you want to apply for. Applications should be sent to applications@varsity.co.uk by midday on 20th July.
Bring your ideas, your perspective, and your curiosity. There’s no better time to join Varsity than Michaelmas Term.
Support Varsity
Varsity is the independent newspaper for the University of Cambridge, established in its current form in 1947. In order to maintain our editorial independence, our print newspaper and news website receives no funding from the University of Cambridge or its constituent Colleges.
We are therefore almost entirely reliant on advertising for funding and we expect to have a tough few months and years ahead.
In spite of this situation, we are going to look at inventive ways to look at serving our readership with digital content and of course in print too!
Therefore we are asking our readers, if they wish, to make a donation from as little as £1, to help with our running costs. Many thanks, we hope you can help!
