Why you should consider visiting the UK
Do you actually know that just recently, a report indicated that the UK was the world’s fifth most valuable travel and tourism market? This statistic is already a testament to the fact that you should consider visiting this country in Europe. And the best part is that no matter what kind of holiday you are up to, there are always plenty of ways to ensure that your day is not boring.
Even for those seeking sustainable travel options, the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly cities allow easy exploration of the country. What we are trying to emphasise is that the United Kingdom has a lot to offer, and you may want to consider it for your next holiday. Let us look at a few reasons why that is so.
Immerse yourself in fascinating history
If you are a history buff, you have probably heard of the British Museum. It actually allows you to explore human history and culture up to two million years ago. And, of course, just like any other building, the British Museum has several quirky secrets that distinguish it. For instance, it stands as the world’s oldest museum and one of the first electrified establishments in London.
Here are a few of the exhibits you’ll find at the place:
- The Oxus Treasure: Combines a selection of metalwork discovered by the Oxus River in the late 80s and is believed to have survived from the Achaemenid Persian Period.
- The Parthenon Marbles: Features a selection of medieval, marble Greek sculptures that were brought to Great Britain in the early 1800s.
- The Rosetta Stone, which has some primordial hieroglyphs carved onto it.
The British Museum is not all there is—we have not even mentioned the Abbotsbury Abbey, Amberley Castle and many others. A closer look at Abbotsbury Abbey will bring to mind the memory of a monastery that was once wealthy and important. For numerous centuries now, Amberley Castle has kept on evolving to suit modern tastes. It offers personalised, impeccable services while allowing you to explore the historic charm of its setting.
Engaging scenic views
The UK is actually one of those beautiful countries you may want to explore. For example, in London alone, you could be goggling over the Barbican center’s beauty in one moment, after which you could be basking in the serenity of the Hampstead Pounds. This is without mentioning the turquoise Cornwall coasts, the scenic mountains of Snowdonia and so on. Let us explore a few more options.
Puzzlewood, Forest of Dean
Many like to view it as a blueprint for Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Puzzlewood covers about 14 acres of land and boasts caves, wooden bridges, ravines, moss-covered rocks, etc. After years of erosion, the underground cave systems became exposed and led to meandering paths. And you may have probably seen the forest on the silver screen, especially if you have watched the likes of Harry Potter.
Minack Theatre
It may actually surprise you to learn that the Minack Theatre has previously ranked as the world’s most beautiful theatre. It looks like an ancient Greek establishment, with a Greco-esque structure emanating from the craggy cliffs over the blue sea.
Something that may excite you about watching a play at the theatre is how the weather is unpredictable. But whether it rains or shines, the play must continue. You will find captivating summer programmes of musicals, classics like Shakespeare, Cornish tales and so much more.
Singing Sands, Isle of Eigg
Surprisingly, the community-owned Isle of Eigg houses about 100 people and is one of the unique destinations you can’t afford to miss. Trekking or cycling northwest to Laig Bay leads to a white crescent beach that will definitely steal your breath away.
Why are they called the Singing Sands? You may ask. Normally, as you walk on them, the quartzite grains usually make a rasping sound. This also happens when the wind brushes the grains.
What about culture
How could we end this discussion without highlighting the place of the UK’s diversity? Besides being a home to many immigrants, this region continues to witness millions of varying visitors from all over the world.
Part of the reason this has not stopped happening is the presence of art festivals, music, dance, and so on. In fact, do you know that, according to the Campaign for Arts, attendance across all art forms rose from 12% between 2020 and 2022 to about 20% between 2021 and 2022?
If you are keen enough, you may have heard of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Commonly referred to as the Fringe or the Edinburgh Fringe, it is the largest of all performance arts festivals in the world. The most recent event in 2024 saw over 51000 performances scheduled all over 262 venues. The following event is set to come back in August 2025 for a period of 25 days.
And we certainly should not forget the Glastonbury Festival, which is popular among fans of modern art. But again, you won’t miss contemporary music, dance, comedy, theatre, etc. Even though the 2024 event has already happened, anticipation for next year’s festival is already reaching a fever pitch.
Final words
Quite frankly, there are too many reasons for you to think about visiting the UK for us to elaborate them all, and this is why we have only picked a few. The place is quite rich with many attractions and activities including engrossing historical sites for the history lovers, beautiful scenery for nature lovers and a lot more culture and entertainment.
And for those interstate travellers in search of new sights and sounds, many such festivals await. Take, for instance, the popular Glastonbury, attended by over 200,000 people on average. So, as you can see, there is something for everybody, and it is up to you to choose which one is perfect for you.
