What’s on in Cambridge theatre this Michaelmas
A new year, a new term, and a new flurry of Camdram shows to sink your teeth into
As we approach the start of Michaelmas 2024, we also greet a whole host of new Camdram delights set to take to the stage. As someone who made the mistake of not taking full advantage of the vast array of shows on offer in my first term last year, heed my advice: go to the theatre! The Cambridge theatre scene provides people with the wonderful opportunity to watch all kinds of shows, from musicals to drag performances to student-written dramas, in various venues dotted around the city. Whether you’re a returning student or incoming fresher, it can be difficult to navigate the Camdram timetable and fit in all of the shows you want to see. Therefore, if you’re looking to get your Camdram fill and experience the variety that university theatre brings, here’s my guide to shows worth watching out for in Michaelmas:
What is Going On?
9:30pm, Tue 22nd October at Corpus Playroom
If you’re a fan of stand-up, this one-night comedy show by Footlight Sameera Bowers is not to be missed, promising poetry about spherical cows, and a PowerPoint about the government’s next lunar mission.
“Heed my advice: go to the theatre!”
Fences
7:45pm, Tue 22nd – 26th October at ADC Theatre
This play, upon which the star-studded, Oscar-award winning film of the same name is based, is sure to be a tear-jerker. So grab your tissues, and let the CUADC tug at your heartstrings in this week two production.
Dragtime! Presents: Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun
11pm, Wed 30th October – Sat 2nd November at ADC Theatre
Looking for Halloween plans? Want to experience drag cabaret? Then Dragtime! is returning to the ADC for their fifth Halloween show, presenting a spectacularly spooky drag show featuring lip-sync, pole dance, live music and much more.
Sister Act
7:45pm, Tue 5th – Sat 9th November at ADC Theatre (matinee at 2pm on the 9th)
“The Cambridge theatre scene provides people with the wonderful opportunity to watch all kinds of shows”
For all the musical theatre lovers out there, it’s only right to take yourself down to the ADC Theatre to experience the feel-good musical comedy Sister Act, presented by CUMTS.
As You Like It
7pm, Tue 12th – Sat 16th November at Corpus Playroom
Shakespeare is a staple for every term of theatre, but what is unique about this production of As You Like It is the use of puppetry. This production is a new take on this Shakespearean comedy, combining tradition with whimsy.
Venus and Adonis
8pm, Fri 15th – Sat 16th November at Clare College Chapel
Clare College Music Society are performing the grandiose opera Venus and Adonis. With opera being an underperformed genre in Cambridge, this is a great opportunity for opera fans to get their fix, especially considering the unique venue that is Clare College Chapel, the acoustics of which will elevate the show to another level.
CUADC/Footlights Pantomime 2024: Snow White
7:45pm, Week 7 to Week 8 at ADC Theatre (check ADC website for complete list of performances)
Christmas means pantomime magic. What better way to end the arduous first term and welcome the festive season than the CUADC/Footlights Pantomime, which this year promises to be “the fairest panto of them all.”
