Lambert secures Union presidency
Asia Lambert will be President of the Cambridge Union Society for Michaelmas 2016

Asia Lambert will be President of the Cambridge Union Society for the upcoming Michaelmas Term, having beat runner-up Joshua Ellis by 316 third-round votes to 251.
Receiving only 39 per cent of votes in the first-round, Lambert’s win was only secured once votes to re-open nominations (of which there were only three) and votes for the third-placed candidate, Charlotte Petter were redistributed according to the Union’s alternative vote system.
Current Speakers Officer, Joshua Ellis was the eventual victor’s nearest challenger in the first round of voting, with 216 votes to Lambert’s 248, while Petter, this term’s Treasurer, was a distant third place with 166.
In a Facebook post, Lambert said: “Thank you so, so much to everyone who voted in the election today and everyone who backed me for President of the Union. I am delighted to announce that I have been elected.”
Asia’s victory was also celebrated by Newnham College on Twitter, who tweeted: “Congrats to Newnhamite @asiaolivia who has been named as the next President of @cambridgeunion.”
She becomes the eighth president of the Union to have been a member of Newnham College, following in the footsteps of, among others, the broadcaster Clare Balding, incumbent Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire Lucy Frazer, and former Labour MP and life peer Baroness Helene Hayman.
Also elected on Friday were Daniel Chouchena, Annabel van Daalen, James Antell and Penelope Jones, who will serve respectively as Executive Officer, Speakers Officer, Treasurer and Social Events Officer.
